** College Level Testing (CLEP) - College Degrees Closer Than You Think **

Airmen and veterans may think the coursework they would need for an associate or bachelor's degree would take far too long to make the effort worthwhile. That may not be the case at all, especially for those who have completed college-level work on their own, in the service, through job experiences, or other means. Sound and reliable college level testing, administered regularly at Saint Leo University, can show whether an airman or veteran has already qualified to earn college credit toward a degree.
The College Level Examination Program, or CLEP, assesses college-level knowledge in a wide variety of subjects that correspond to the general education requirements in many college degree programs. Scoring high enough on a CLEP test may satisfy the requirement to take a three-credit college course. Students may earn up to 30 credits, depending on their scores on tests in English composition, literature, mathematics, humanities, American government, American history, natural sciences, and Spanish. CLEP exams are free to military personnel and some civilians.

Another optional group of tests, the DSST exams, are available through a program called the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES). It works much the same way as does CLEP: students take tests to show that they have learned enough to be awarded college credit. A satisfactory score in certain DSST exams can satisfy the requirements for completing specific courses in areas including English composition, aesthetics, mathematics, physical science, social science, history, aesthetics, philosophy, psychology, sociology, criminal justice, accounting, business law, computer skills, finance, economics, and management. Many Colleges, universities and the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) accept CLEP and DSST credit and award college credit toward your degree. Saint Leo administers standardized exams twice a week on Monday at 1pm and Wednesday at 9am at the Spratt Education Building in Building 501. Testing is available to military and civilians, and prospective students can sign up at the Saint Leo University office in the Spratt education building. For more information, call the Saint Leo office at Shaw at (803) 666-3221.
